International tourism recovered more than expected in 2010 as announced on Monday in america. International tourist arrivals grew nearly 7% to 935000000 that after 4% decline recorded for 2009, the year the most severe global economic downturn.
The vast majority of destinations around the world presented a positive number, which managed to offset recent losses or closer to this goal. However, the recovery came at different rates, driven primarily by emerging economies.
“The recovery in international tourism is good news, especially for developing countries that depend on the sector for income generation and employment,” said UNWTO Secretary-General Tale Raffia. “Now the challenge will be to consolidate this growth in coming years amid an uncertain global economic environment.”
“Tourism has once again proven to be a highly resilient sector. However, we have to work harder and better towards greater integration and cooperation among all stakeholders in the tourism value chain to increase our competitiveness and respond more effectively to challenges, such as those that emerged from the close of European airspace in April, “said Raffia
According to World Tourism Barometer World Tourism Organization. International tourist arrivals increased 6.7% compared to 2009, with growth in all regions of the world. The number of arrivals reached 935 million, exceeding the figure of 58 million 22 million 2009 and 2008 peak level before the crisis (913 million).
While all the regions recorded growth in international arrivals, emerging economies remain the main drivers of this performance. This recovery at two speeds, lower in the advanced economies (+5%) and faster in the emerging (+8%), is a reflection of the global economic situation and dominate the 2011 and the near future.
