If you’re thinking about getting together with some buddies for an unforgettable road trip, then you’re not alone. Tons of college students go on road trips each year, to many different destinations. The key to having a great road trip is to know where you’re going, where you’re staying, and what you’re going to do once you get there. However, there are other things that you’ll want to keep in mind.

For example, it’s always good to have a checklist to turn to—just to make sure that you don’t forget anything. Following is a checklist that we’ve devised specifically for college road trips:

  • A car – Yes, the most obvious thing on the list. But it’s more than just ensuring that you have a car to take on the trip. You always want to make sure that your car is in good condition for a long trip. This means checking your tire’s air pressure, tread depth, power steering fluid, transmission fluid, brake fluid, and wiper blades. Go ahead and get your oil changed while you’re at it.
  • Gas money – The other most important factor of a road trip. Make sure that every person in the car has money to contribute towards gas.
  • Everyone’s CD collection and MP3 player – Chances are that you and your buddies don’t all love the same tunes. You may have some bands in common, but not everyone may enjoy Queen and The Rolling Stones as much as you do. So be sure to tell everyone to bring whatever music they’d like to listen to—and then shuffle it all up.
  • Enough clothes for three days – Even if you’re staying for a week, you only need enough clothes to last you three days. Many hotels or rentals have laundry services or facilities, so you can always wash your clothes. And, worse comes to worse, you can visit a local Laundromat for an hour or two one day.

It’s a short checklist, but it’s enough to get you started. What else would you add?
